Traditional fall fabrics like tweed and patterns like herringbone always felt stuffy to me. Reminiscent of my family's roots in northern England, the warm materials seemed better-suited for cozy days in the pub or for days out on horseback rather than a life spent hustling and bustling in New York City. How wrong was I? Between Kate Middleton, "Downtown Abbey" and the latest Ralph Lauren ads, I'm ready to give in.
Tweed and herringbone can be staid (especially if you choose a skirt suit), but our advice is to take this trend and make it your own. Are you a blazer-and-jeans kinda gal? Swap out your black jacket for a tweed topper from your local thrift store (grab a men's version and have it tailored, paying special attention to the sleeves). Try a pair of slim herringbone pants with a sleek turtleneck and outrageously high heels. Glasses, red lips and a cross-body bag will keep your look current. I'm planning on wearing my dad's grey tweed jacket with a pair of leather pants and black booties. And there will be no horseback riding involved.
Here, 15 celebrities in tweed and herringbone who are anything but staid, plus a few shoppable options, just in case you're so inclined.
